Premiers v Patumahoe

Good Pressure Leads to First Penalty

Solid return by backs and the resulting quick ball catching the Patumahoe backs offside. Dean slots the penalty.

Deano Cuts Through Early

Dean Cummins cuts through the Patumahoe defence but the final pass to Fritz Lee goes down.

Good Forward D with Deano Controlling Field Position

The fowards muscle up forcing Paty to go to the backs. The ball is charged down and Myah sets up the ball for Deano to carve of some yards for good field position.

Rayza On The Crash Ball

From the quick throw in from Cody Martin, Rayza cuts through from lineout ball and sets up the second phase. Patumahoe infringe at the breakdown for Deano to knock over his second penalty to take the score to 6-0

My oh Myah

From turnover ball the Ardmore Marist fowards and backs from one side to the other and cause Paty infringe once again. Dean converts the opportunity. Myah again crunches a defender.

The Play Leading Up To The Fourth Penalty

Good lineout win by Ed Roa and a couple of deep kicks by Deano leaving Paty with the option of running it out only to run into the solid Ardmore Marist D. Two good tackles in sucession by Ray Cullen

More 2nd Half Action v Patumahoe

Backs and forwards combining well to get onto attack. Several players feature including Cody, Dean, Fritz, Siua, Preston and Ray.

Good Continuity By Backs & Forwards

Some good continuity by both backs and fowards against Patumahoe keeping the pressure on.

Fifth Penalty v Patumahoe

Dean attacks the line and draws yet another head high penalty which he coolly slots into the teeth of a strong wind to take the lead 15-14.

Premiers v Waiuku

Myah Crashes Through Waiuku Defence

Jeremiah Fatialofa takes the pass from Rusty and finds the short way to the line.

Sherz Over Against Waiuku

After a incisive break by Whaiora Rangiwai, Sherwin Stowers rounds the rest of the defence to score against Waiuku. Dean Cummins completes the play with the conversion.

Not Straight - you have to be kidding!

Only two people believe that this one is crooked. Check out the looks of disbelief after this call vs Waiuku. We certainly got no favours on the day!

Premiers v Manurewa

Myah Running Over Rewa

Jeremiah taking the direct route to the line against Manurewa.

Soni's Try vs Manurewa

After some great ball retention by backs and forwards Samisoni Halanukonuka snipes over for a very good try converted by Dean Cummins.

Action v Rewa

Terra takes good lineout ball followed by a good foward drive and backs moving the ball across field.

Another Good Lineout Take by Terra

A good lineout take and foward drive. Pity about the truck and trailer call that broke it up.

Great Run by Fritz and Suli v Manurewa

A bust up the middle by No 8 Fritz Lee and then on to Suli who survives two head high tackles.

Premiers v Pukekohe

Villiame Leaves Then Standing

Check out the wheels on this lad as he stands up the opposition and scores a very well taken try v Pukekohe at home.

Premiers v Bombay

Rayza Going Over the Top

After a good bust by Suli the ball finds it way to Raymond Cullen who goes over in the tackle for a match winning try.

Clive's Comments - Welcome To The Deano Show

Dean Cummins had his best game of the season and indeed for quite some time for the South Auckland Motors Ardmore Marist Premiers as he controlled the game from first five and kicked five penalties to bring home the boys 15-14 at home against Patumahoe.

Right from the start the boys showed they were out to win this one in front of the sponsors who had gathered upstairs for Sponsors Day and were almost over for an opening try of a break by Dean Cummins saw him cutting through with only the final pass to Fritz Lee being put down.

However after four minutes they were up 3-0 thanks the first of Dean’s penalties from around forty meters courtesy of the 10 meter rule.

A missed Patumahoe penalty from a scrum infringement was missed by Doug Sanft (one of three former Ardmore Marist players in the Paty team).

The team then swung onto attack with good field position being gained by good use of the wind. From a good burst by Ray Cullen off lineout ball Paty infringed at the ruck slowing down the ball and Dean slotted his second for the day from around 22 meters to take the score to 6-0 at the 12 minutes mark. What was good in this play was the quick work at the lineout by Cody and Fritz (and the lifters Siua and Myah) who in order to nullify the Patumahoe height in the lineout got the ball in quickly before the Paty line was even ready.

From the kick off we lost the ball and were penalised for an infringement resulting in Paty gaining field position. Paty dominated field position and from a lineout close to the line the forward drove over from a lineout to score the only try of the game. There was more than a hint of truck and trailer in the try and the sages in the sponsors’ event all agreed that this was the case. The conversion missed and the score moved to 6-5 after 16 minutes.

From the kick off Patumahoe retained the ball through several phases and appeared to be setting some dominance in the possession stakes. However the Ardmore Marist forwards were able to snuff out any significant forward momentum often taking the carrier behind the gain line and were able to commit fewer players to the breakdown. A good example of this was in the 19th minute where after a series of forward drives Paty were forced to go to the backs. The flying Hugh and Rusty put pressure on first five Daryl Sanft and the ball bounced into the arms of Myah and the ball was cleared right into the Patumahoe 22 by Dean.

It was from this pressure that the third penalty was knocked over by Dean. Again it was a good build up that could have easily resulted in a try and featured some strong work by the forwards and backs and a thunderous charge by Myah who again put a defender on his back.

Five minutes later we were back at the table against with another Dean Cummins penalty from around forty meters and the score was up to 12-5.

Patumahoe then had a period of dominance and the last five to ten minutes was spent on defence. The D looks a heck of a lot more organised and all Patumahoe could muster for their hard work was a penalty for a head high by Hugh which was in reality a pretty poor call by the ref. This left the score at 12-8 at half time.

After the half time canapés and fine wine the sponsors were back on deck for the second half that started with a string of penalties a the 2,4 and 6 minute marks all for head high tackles. In all honesty most refs would have not called these however with Doug Sanft unable to find the goal posts on two of the three occasions the score was at 12-11 when at the seven minute mark Myah was binned for a shoulder hit on a Paty player and Doug Sanft goaled from 40 meters to put Paty into a 14-12 lead.

With Myah in the bin the boys stepped in up an Paty had no scoring opportunities with the exception on a charge down on the fifteen minute mark that fortuitously bounced into the Paty players 20 meters down field. We were perhaps lucky it went to a lock as the opportunity was snuffed out by some poor passing and we got a relieving penalty.

From the resulting play a hit to the head of Fritz that left him seeing stars and Dean pushed the ball into Paty territory.

The next seven minutes saw the boys attacking showing good patience and with the backs and forwards combining well to maintain possession and field position on attack. The inevitable happened and a further head high hit saw a Paty player in the bin on the 25 minute mark and Dean again slotted the penalty for a slender 15-14 lead.

The next fifteen minutes was a real arm wrestle with Ardmore Marist having the better field position and spending good minutes on attack. It was just little errors, knock on or a forward pass that stopped us from scoring again.

The last throw of the dice came down to Paty who swung onto attack deep into our 22 and from a ruck we were penalised on a touchies call. With full time up the kick was the only option and to the relief of all the kick went wide.

Just a note on the touchies call. We have had a number of non-calls for foul play this year which we believe the touch judge must have seen and it would have been a shame if we had lost on this call considering these other non-calls. My call on review of the footage was the Whai had every right to the ball he was the second man to the breakdown and had his hands on the ball and should not have been penalised.

All in all a great game. The front row with Siua on board looks much better and his mobility and work rate is up there with Jeremiahs who himself is having a great year and must be pushing for higher recognition. Cody Martin, back at hooker with the season ending injury to Suli has grown into the captaincy role and is now making much better and importantly quicker decisions. Terra and Ed are getting their lineout together and also having good work rates around the park on attack but especially on D.

Our loose forwards, Hugh, Rusty, Fritz and Amos are superb and while as a trio a bit on the small side have speed and strength that is starting to provide regular turnover ball.

In the halfs both Soni and JP are stepping up with improved performances in all aspects. As mentioned previously this was a superb game by Deano showing his experience and skill in reading and controlling the game.

Rayzas move into 2nd five seems to have worked a treat as he is a big fast unit and can use his strength to get over the gain line and set up the second phase and his D seems to be much more sure at this position. Similarly moving Preston to centre has improved his game. Firstly he does not have to stop the crash attack and he is also able to show his distribution skills and his surprising pace. In Whai and Dylan we have two different wingers who play the game to the highest level and most importantly are good under the high ball.

Matthew Kitto continues to build in confidence and he has an able replacement is Cameron Bell who is a great player to bring off the bench when the game needs an injection of pace.

Next week is Puke at Puke. A must win so make an effort to get out there and bring home a win.

The team was: 1. Siua, 2. Cody, 3. Myah, 4. Terra, 5. Ed, 6. Rusty, 7. Hugh, 8. Fritz, 9. Soni, 10. Deano, 11. Dylan, 12. Rayza, 13. Preston, 14. Whai, 15. Kitto, 16. Mike (On for Myah while in bin), 17. Murph, 18. Neumi, 19. Moss (Fritz 62 min), 20. JP (Soni 55 min), 21. Cam (Kitto 63 min), 22. Carlos

Goldy's Game

Hello team,

Last weekend was or worst of the season with both the Premiers and Reserves going down to Rewa.

The Prems went down 20 points to 12 in a disappointing performance littered with junior boy errors and decision making. This is the first time in memory that we have been out of the top 4 and we are 9 points behind the 4th placed team. Work to be done here. Why Dean Cummins is not starting I don’t know. He is the most intelligent back in the club and comes off the bench. I say this not knowing if he is recovering from injury or is just out of favour. Our positional kicking is woeful and just leaves the forwards running up and down the field not knowing where to go. It looks to me like the kicker doesn’t know. Some coaching needs to be done with these guys to get us back on track. The talent is there. It needs nurturing. Where is Hughie Green? He has been the one young player that the club has looked forward to getting to Prem ranks. We must look after our own guys before the imports. This week is a home game for us against Waiuku.

The Reserves went down in a thoughtless encounter with Rewa by 17 to 10. Once again where were the thinkers in this game. We were once down by 2 points with a penalty almost in front. A quick tap was taken and the first receiver knocked it on. This team has let Rewa into the game each of every game the last couple of years and we are the better side. Its all mental stuff here.

The Under 21s went on their merry way again although this was a really tough encounter against Waihi. The gold diggers were fired up and our guys had a tough time. But they stuck to their guns unlike to top 2 teams and came out winners 17 to 10.

Under 85s won 12-10.

See you at the park supporting again next week.

Goldy.

Under 85kg Match Report

The Ardmore Marist Under 85's won their first away game on Saturday, against a determined Pakuranga Cobra's Team. After a poor first half conceding an unconverted try, and a penalty, the Ardmore Boys dug deep and came out with a win, with 2 second half tries and a crucial conversion with 5 minutes remaining.

Clive's Comments - Reserves On Top Again

The Rays Gym Sponsored Reserves won another game taking out the bonus points against a confident and confrontational Karaka side.

This result leaves them seven points clear on the table with four from four. Great work guys.

Clive's Comments - U21’s In An Easy One

The U21’s romped home 90-0 against a Drury side that has conceded over 90 point is each game to date. The boys scored 16 tries however had Chiefs disease and could only convert 5 and the score could have been 114-0 had they kicked them all.

Well done.

NZ Marist 2009 Player of the Year

At the recent NZ Marist AGM, Callum Bruce - Hamilton Marist, was named as the NZ Marist Player of The Year for the 2009 season.

In 2009 Callum played for the Chiefs Super 14 franchise and the Waikato Air NZ Cup team who made the final for the first time with Callum playing in every game and captaining them in their last foray on the paddock. Regardless of his Super 14 and Air NZ Cup commitments, Callum has always made time for the Club and continues to play Club rugby when he is allowed. He always makes time to attend Club practices during his representative season and attends club games and team functions whenever he can.

The talented midfield back played for the Highlanders Super 14 team in 2006/7 before moving to the Waikato. He can cover at both 12 and 10 and is also a competent goal kicker. The Hastings-born back has previously played 24 games for Otago and has represented the Napier OB Marist Club in Colts and 7's rugby and attended the NZ Marist 7's Tournament in Wellington. Whilst in Otago, Callum also played for another Marist affiliate club, Dunedin RFC, and represented that club in the NZ Marist Sevens team in 2002 to Samoa. He has also been a member of the 2006 - 08 NZ Maori Rugby team.

Callum is a great 'Marist' man and loyal to his Hamilton Marist Club. He won the 2009 Aaron Hopa Memorial Trophy which is awarded to a member of the Waikato Air NZ Cup team who made the most outstanding contribution to team culture.

NZ Marist 2009 Personality of the Year

This award was presented for the first time at the NZ Marist AGM to David Neame of Greymouth Marist for the 2009 season.

This award recognises David's overall contribution to the Greymouth Marist RFC. David's playing record at senior and senior reserve level dates back 20 years from 1990-2010, and he has continued unbroken through to West Coast club finals season 2009.

David has been a team captain at both senior reserve, and senior level. He is a tireless trainer, and even at the age of 37, he is one of the most professional players our club has ever seen. At pre season trainings, he pushes and encourages the younger players to realise their potential, and that is such a valuable asset for any club to have.

In the days where most senior sides field teams with a youthful look about them, the experience, wisdom and knowledge of having a stalwart like David in the team is most invaluable.

David was selected for the NZ Marist Colts in 1993, and the coaching and experience of that tour, helped David grow into the fine club man that we have today.

David has represented and captained the West Coast senior team, and all up has 16 caps for the senior rep team.

Off the field, David's contribution has included committee service, tireless fundraising hours and the executive post as current club captain.

David has also over the years has coached several school boy teams, and been very popular with our school boys. As a player, at no stage has David fallen foul of referees or disciplinary panels, nor has he devoted any less than 100 percent support to club management, promotion and administration.

The nominee is a funeral director and as such is at the mercy of death's schedule - a schedule with little regard for match and practice. He does however still manage to make practically every training and game. In 2009, David was one of the driving forces behind setting up a Greymouth Marist R.F.C golden oldie side, and this was a huge success.

Greymouth Marist now has a database of former players from around New Zealand that come back to Greymouth for club games and having this team shows the true Marist spirit and what it means to the former players to still feel a part of their club. It is also very healthy for the club coffers, especially for the clubrooms when there is a home match, so there is a lot to be thankful to David for this.

David is also a very popular person not only in the club, but West Coast wide, and a facebook group has been set up for David, which now boasts over 600 members worldwide. In it are photos and video clips featuring David, and an interview with current All Black hooker Andrew Hore from the 2009 Steinlager Rugby awards, giving David some advice on his career. We feel David deserves this recognition for his services to the Greymouth R.F.C and is a most fitting tribute to David as he enters the end of his long playing service to the Greymouth RFC.
