Try for ex-Ardmore Marist man John Afoa in 100th game for European Challenge Cup semifinalists Gloucester

Former All Blacks prop John Afoa scored a try in his 100th game for Gloucester as the English club beat Bundee Aki's Connacht in the quarterfinals of the European Challenge Cup second-tier competition.

Gloucester, Challenge Cup champions in 2015 and runners-up last year,  fielded five Kiwis - Afoa, Jason Woodward, Tom Marshall, Willi Heinz and ex-All Black lock Jeremy Thrush -  and had two more on the bench for their 33-28 win in Galway on Saturday (Sunday NZ Time).

Afoa, 34, galloped some distance for his try early in the second half to give Gloucester a nine-point buffer.

The South Aucklander had 101 games for the Blues and 36 tests for the All Blacks before leaving after the 2011 Rugby World Cup victory.

Afoa had 58 appearances for Irish club Ulster before moving to Gloucester in 2014, but his claim to fame was as a junior coach with Ardmore Marist between 2002-2004.

He will join former Blues coach Pat Lam at Bristol next season.

Both teams scored four tries with Aki - fresh from Ireland's Six Nations grand slam triumph - also dotting down.
