Introducing Woodlands Rugby Football Club, representing Southland this Saturday

Southlands finest will be running on in the hope of taking the Middlesex Cup home for the winter.

The Woodlands RFC will be heading up from the deep south to Bruce Pulman Park this week to compete for the Middlesex Cup.

Woodlands RFC was founded in 1897 and is home to Southland front row legends Jason Rutledge, Jamie MacKintosh and Clarke Dermody.

Woodlands is current Galbraith Shield Champion (15 a side) and Southland Club 7’s Champions.

The side is coached by Dan Cavanagh & Richard Jones and ably managed by Kevin Muir.

While coach Dan Cavanagh was reserved about the sides preparation, we understand that this team will be top contenders on Saturday having worked hard over the years to establish a reputation as a breeding ground for 7s talent.

"Preparation has been light and steady.  Players to watch out for include Drew Carter and Water Technician Michael ‘G-Dog’ Gellatly" Cavanagh explained.

"Drew is the younger and more dynamic brother of Southlands forgotten rake and Mossburns favorite son, Ryan Carter" he said.

"G-Dog is on light duties and will provide the banter, laughter and quality water carry that his teammates require in an unfamiliar form of the game"

Cavanagh said that the team are fizzing about the opportunity to head north and compete for the Middlesex Cup.

"The Lads from the Deep South are looking forward to a few more sunshine hours up north and a chance to throw the swede around".

We are looking forward to meeting Southlands finest this weekend and sharing a few laughs in the sun at Bruce Pulman Park.
